Artists’ Legal Information Society
We provide free legal information, workshops, and library resources to emerging artists. Our goal is to help artists of all types, including actors, musicians, dancers, writers, filmmakers, visual artists, and others, understand their legal problems and provide a framework for navigating these obstacles. Areas of assistance include contracts, defamation, copyright, trademarks, royalties, and more.

ALIS is an excellent resource for artists
Since its inception, ALIS has been instrumental in providing legal information and services to Nova Scotian musicians and artists. Many of the artists working in Nova Scotia have limited financial resources and are from lower or middle class socio-economic backgrounds. For these artists, access to legal services is essential in maintaining control over intellectual property rights, and in making competent and strategic business decisions where long term contractual relationships are negotiated. Without the education, information and resources that ALIS provides, Nova Scotia artists are at best at a disadvantage with respect to their careers, and at worst vulnerable to exploitative and manipulative practices which are unfortunately still present in the music industry.
– Serge Samson, Events and Member Training Manager of Music Nova Scotia
Today, Nova Scotia’s writers must learn to navigate the options and rapid pace of change in the fields of writing and publishing. ALIS, particularly its recent publication A Legal Guide for Writers, is an invaluable resource that provides clarity to, and understanding of, aspects of copyright and contract law that many writers find confusing.
